10 Tips for Vintage-Looking iPhone Photos

7 min read · Photography

The iPhone camera is clinically sharp. That is great for documents, less great for vibes. If you want photos that feel borrowed from another decade, you need to work with light, color, and process — not against them. Here are ten approaches that actually work.

1. Shoot in natural light whenever possible

Window light and overcast skies naturally soften contrast — the same conditions analog photographers preferred.

2. Avoid digital zoom

Use optical lens options (0.5×, 1×, 2×, 3×) instead of pinching to zoom. Cleaner files, less noise.

3. Underexpose slightly

Tap to set exposure, then drag down a touch. Film loved shadow detail; digital defaults to blown highlights.

4. Look for texture

Peeling paint, knit sweaters, grainy wood — vintage aesthetics love tactile surfaces.

5. Simplify the background

Old lenses had shallow effective depth. Move your subject away from busy walls to mimic that separation.

6. Limit your color palette

Shoot scenes with two or three dominant colors. Monochromatic outfits and environments age better in post and in film emulations.

7. Use a polaroid app at capture time

Applying a filter after the fact often looks pasted-on. Poly bakes the look into the viewfinder so you compose for it.

8. Add dated context

Cars, signage, fashion, and objects anchor a photo in time. A polaroid caption with a month and year completes the illusion.

9. Shoot vertical and square

Classic instant film was not widescreen. Square and portrait orientations feel more analog by default.

10. Curate ruthlessly

Vintage photographers finished a roll and picked favorites. Keep your library tight — quality over quantity makes the whole collection feel more authentic.
